ACC & Big 12 Week 2 Recap
ACC
It was a pretty good week for the ACC, as ten teams improved to 2-0, including all four of the conference’s Top 25 teams. Conference play began as Syracuse (2-0, 1-0 ACC) defeated Wake Forest (1-1, 0-1 ACC), 30-17.
#9 Notre Dame 34, Virginia 27
The Fighting Irish (2-0) survived their first-ever game in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a season-ending injury to QB Malik Zaire, as backup QB DeShone Kizer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with just 12 seconds remaining. Zaire suffered a fractured ankle in the final seconds of the third quarter, with the Cavaliers (0-2, 0-0 ACC) trailing 26-14. Virginia QB Matt Johns rushed for a 4-yard touchdown and RB Albert Reid followed with a 1-yard run to put the Cavaliers up 27-26 with 1:54 left, setting up Notre Dame’s winning two-minute drill.
#11 Florida State 34, USF 14
Seminoles (2-0, 0-0 ACC) RB Dalvin Cook ran over the Bulls (1-1, 0-0 AAC), gaining 266 yards and rushing for three touchdowns. Cook’s performance is second only in school history to Greg Allen’s 322 yard effort against Western Carolina in 1981. QB Everett Golson threw for 163 yards (14-26) and one touchdown, and K Roberto Aguayo added field goals of 30 and 38 yards.
#12 Clemson 41, Appalachian State 10
The Tigers (2-0, 0-0 ACC) scored 38 unanswered points and held the Mountaineers (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) to just 95 yards passing. QB Deshaun Watson threw for 248 yards (19-26) and three touchdowns. RB Wayne Gallman led the Tigers’ ground game with 79 of the team’s 140 rushing yards and one touchdown, while Charone Peake caught four passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns including a career-high 59-yarder.
#15 Georgia Tech 65, Tulane 10
The Yellow Jackets (2-0, 0-0 ACC) ground out 439 yards rushing while holding the Green Wave (0-2, 0-0 AAC) to just 71 yards. QB Justin Thomas threw for just 97 yards (7-9) but threw two touchdowns passes and rushed for 71 yards and another touchdown. It was a total team effort on offense as five other players scored rushing touchdowns, and three of the eight completed passes on the day were caught in the endzone.

North Carolina (1-1, 0-0 ACC) defeated North Carolina A&T (1-1, 0-0 MEAC), 53-14
Virginia Tech (1-1, 0-0 ACC) defeated Furman (0-2, 0-0 Southern), 42-3
Houston (2-0, 0-0 AAC) defeated Louisville (0-2, 0-0 ACC), 34-31
Big 12
The Big 12 went 8-2 in week two, with all three of the conference’s Top 25 teams earning their second wins of the season.
#19 Oklahoma 31, #23 Tennessee 24 – 2 OT
In front of the largest crowd (102,455) to ever watch the Sooners (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) play, it took two overtime periods before they had their first lead. The Volunteers (1-1, 0-0 SEC) scored the first 17 points and led 17-3 with under nine minutes left until Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield tied the game with two fourth quarter touchdown passes. Mayfield was also the star of overtime, rushing for the Sooners first touchdown and connecting with Sterling Shepard for an 18-yard pass for the go-ahead score. CB Zack Sanchez intercepted Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs to seal the Sooners second victory of the season.
#3 TCU 70 Stephen F. Austin 7
The Horned Frogs (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) tallied up their second-highest point total in school history against the Lumberjacks (0-2, 0-0 Southland). QB Trevon Boykin threw for 285 yards (18-27) and four touchdowns before giving way to backup Bram Koulhausen (7-9, 112 yards, 1 TD). TCU gained 224 yards on the ground and four touchdowns, highlighted by Denzel Johnson with 71 yards, and Aaron Green who rushed for two touchdowns. 11 different receivers caught at least one pass, led by Kolby Listenbee with 142 yards and one touchdown.
#4 Baylor 66, Lamar 31
The Bears (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) amassed 785 yards of total offense, second highest total in school history, dominating the Cardinals (1-1, 0-0 Southland) in the teams’ first meeting since 1981. On the ground, Baylor rushed for 412 yards (6th all-time) and had three 100-yard rushers: Shock Linwood (130 yards, 3 TDs), Terence Williams (121 yards) and Johnny Jefferson (121 yards, 1 TD). QB Seth Russell threw for 342 yards (23-34), connecting with Corey Coleman six times for 182 yards and four touchdowns. Jay Lee added 111 yards on nine catches.
Texas Tech 69, UTEP 20
The Raiders (2-0, 0-0 Big 12) rolled up 674 yards of total offense as the Miners (0-2, 0-0 CUSA) had no answer for QB Patrick Mahomes. The freshman QB threw for 361 yards (18-33) and four touchdowns and ran for two more in three quarters of action.
Texas 42, Rice 28
The Longhorns (1-1, 0-0 Big 12) scored the first 21 points of the game, and scored 21 more to put the game out of reach in the third quarter. The Owls (1-1, 0-0 CUSA) could not contain QB Jerrod Heard, who rushed for 96 yards and threw for 120 yards (4-7) and two touchdowns.
