ACC & Big 12 Week 5 Recap:Clemson Stays Undefeated; Oklahoma Knocks Off WVU
Members of the Florida Citrus Sports Team Selection Committee traveled throughout ACC and Big 12 country this weekend, meeting with fans across both conferences in preparation of the 2015 Russell Athletic Bowl on Tuesday, December 29th in Orlando, FL.
#12 Clemson 24, #6 Notre Dame 22
With a little help from Hurricane Joaquin, 85,000 fans, and key defensive stops down the stretch, the Tigers (4-0, 1-0 ACC) withstood a fourth quarter Fighting Irish (4-1) comeback to remain undefeated.
Trailing 21-3 to start the fourth quarter, Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer connected with C.J. Prosise for a 56-yard touchdown strike. Clemson extended their lead to 14 with a field goal, only to have Kizer drive the Fighting Irish down the field and rush for a three-yard score. The teams traded possessions in the final minutes as Tiger LB B.J. Goodson intercepted Kizer on one drive and recovered a forced fumble on another. On the other side of the ball, the Tigers went three-and-out three straight times, giving the Fighting Irish a chance to tie the game with one minute left.
Kizer found Torii Hunter, Jr. in the end zone for a 1-yard pass with just six second remaining, but DT Carlos Watkins stopped Kizer short of the goal line on the two-point conversion attempt to preserve the victory.
#15 Oklahoma 44, #23 West Virginia 24
QB Baker Mayfield passed for 320 yards and three touchdowns, Dede Westbrook caught five passes for 107 yards and Durron Neal added 87 yards receiving as the Sooners (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) topped the Mountaineers (3-1, 0-1 Big 12). Oklahoma forced five turnovers, including a 41-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Jordan Evans to seal the victory.
North Carolina 38, Georgia Tech 31
WR Quinshad Davis threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to QB Marquise Williams to erase a three-touchdown deficit, giving the Tar Heels (4-1, 1-0 ACC) and upset over the Yellow Jackets (2-3, 0-2 ACC) in Atlanta. Trailing 21-0 with four minutes remaining in the second quarter, North Carolina outscored Georgia Tech 38-10 for their largest comeback win in program history. Williams threw for just 134 yards (13-24), but rushed for 148 yards and two additional touchdowns.
Pittsburgh 17, Virginia Tech 13
Qadree Ollison ran for 122 yards and a second-half touchdown as the Panthers (3-1, 1-0 ACC) limited the Hokies (2-3, 0-1 ACC) to just 100 yards of offense. On the other side of the ball, Pittsburgh sacked Virginia Tech QB Brenden Motley seven times for minus-57 yards, intercepted three passes, and limited the Hokies to nine nine rushing yards on 33 carries.
#5 Baylor 63, Texas Tech 35
The Bears (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) hit the Red Raiders (3-2, 0-2 Big 12) with a 79-yard TD run by Shock Linwood on the third play of the game and never stopped running, piling up 368 yards on the ground and another 312 through the air.
#4 TCU 50, Texas 7
Trevone Boykin threw five touchdown passes, including four to freshman KaVontae Turpin, as the Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) rode a 30-point first quarter to rout the Longhorns (1-4, 0-2 Big 12).
Louisville 20, NC State 13
Lamar Jackson ran for 121 yards, including a 68-yard scoring sprint in the opening quarter, to lead the Cardinals (2-3, 1-1 ACC) over the Wolfpack (4-1, 0-1 ACC).
#20 Oklahoma State 36, Kansas State 34
The Cowboys (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) lost four different quarterbacks to injury, but prevailed when Ben Grogan made a 37-yard field goal with 32 seconds remaining to defeat the Wildcats (3-1, 0-1 Big 12).
Duke 9, Boston College 7
Ross Martin kicked three first-half field goals as the Blue Devils (4-1, 2-0 ACC) earned a hard-fought conference victory over the Eagles (3-2, 0-2 ACC).
#11 Florida State 24, Wake Forest 16
The Seminoles (4-0, 2-0 ACC) survived injuries to Dalvin Cook, Terrance Smith, and Nate Andrews as Tyler Hunter intercepted a game-tying pass in the end zone with twenty seconds remaining to preserve victory over the upset-minded Demon Deacons (2-03, 0-2 ACC).
