ACC & Big 12 Week 9 Roundup: Baylor is only Big 12 unbeaten after Oklahoma falls to K-State

Oklahoma’s 22-game winning streak in true road games came to an end on Saturday with a 48-41 loss to Kansas State in Bill Syder Family Stadium in Manhattan.

“They earned it, and we have to build off of it,” Kansas State head coach Chris Klieman said after the Wildcats’ stunning win. “We have an opportunity to be successful because of our preparation. We attack the process on a daily basis Monday through Friday. We said, ‘I don’t care what the score is, you just detail every play and give yourself the opportunity.’ They sure did that, so I’m really happy for the guys.”

The Sooners took an early 10-0 lead after a 44-yard field goal from kicker Gabe Brkic and a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jalen Hurts within the first six minutes of play, but the Wildcats didn’t go quietly when facing an early deficit.

Quarterback Skylar Thompson put Kansas State on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter, then added another just before halftime after defensive back AJ Parker intercepted a trick play pass from wide receiver Nick Basquine.

“Any time you get a turnover on defense, it’s gonna show momentum,” Parker said. “It’s gonna get your offense great field position, so I feel like that was a good play for our team to be successful in this game.”

Wildcats wide receiver Joshua Youngblood also added a 4-yard run for a score, and kicker Blake Lynch added a 35-yard field goal to help Kansas State take a 24-23 lead into the break.

Oklahoma’s offense continued to struggle putting plays together in the second half and remained scoreless throughout the third quarter. Meanwhile, the Wildcats racked up 17 points as Lynch hit a 37-yarder and Thompson had two more rushing touchdowns to end the quarter 41-23.

The Sooners outscored the Wildcats 18-7 in the fourth quarter as Oklahoma attempted to rally. Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had a 70-yard score and Hurts scored his third rushing touchdown of the night, but Oklahoma still trailed by seven with 1:45 to go.

The Sooners attempted an onside kick, but the officials determined the ball hit an Oklahoma player prior to going 10 yards, giving the ball to the Wildcats to run out the rest of the clock.

“We had a similar situation at Baylor my first year. They engaged our player and it definitely hit him before the 10-yard ,” Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley said. “But I was under the impression if they engage our player into it that there’s no illegal touching. It was a 50-50 call that didn’t go our way.”

Here’s a quick look at some of the other top games in the ACC and Big 12 this week:

Miami 16, Pittsburgh 12: Though N’Kosi Perry won the starting quarterback job, a late 32-yard touchdown pass from backup Jarren Williams to K.J. Osborn lifted the Hurricanes to a 16-12 victory over the Panthers on Saturday.

Florida State 35, Syracuse 17: Florida State running back Cam Akers ran for 144 yards and four touchdowns, and also passed for 26 yards, as he tied the school record for rushing touchdowns in a single game and helped the ‘Noles breeze past Syracuse.

Louisville 28, Virginia 21: The Cardinals held off the Cavaliers as quarterback Micale Cunningham and running back Javian Hawkins accounted for two touchdowns each, including one each in the fourth quarter to help Louisville rally past Virginia.

North Carolina 20, Duke 17: Duke attempted a trick play with 18 seconds left in the game, but running back Deon Jackson was intercepted by North Carolina linebacker Chazz Surratt and the Tar Heels survived their longtime rival.

TCU 37, Texas 27: The Horned Frogs upset the then-No. 15 Longhorns on Saturday as quarterback Max Duggan passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns, including a tiebreaking 44-yarder to wide receiver Jalen Reagor. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger had a career-high four interceptions on top of his 321 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma State 34, Iowa State 27: The Cowboys snapped the Cyclones’ three-game winning streak as freshman quarterback Spencer Sanders finished 16-for-24 for 249 yards and two touchdowns while running back Chuba Hubbard accounted for 22 carries for 116 yards and a score.

Kansas 37, Texas Tech 34: Jayhawks kicker Liam Jones made a 32-yard field goal with two seconds left in the game after his previous attempt was blocked and then fumbled by Red Raider defensive back Douglas Coleman III. The win was just the second Jayhawks victory over Texas Tech in program history.
