ACC & Big 12 Week 3 Preview: Iowa-Iowa State facing off in annual Cy-Hawk Series showdown

No. 19 Iowa (2-0) at Iowa State (1-0) – 4 p.m. on FS1
College GameDay heads to Ames this weekend as Iowa State plays host to No. 19 Iowa in the 16th official installment of the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk series between the state’s two largest public universities. (Overall, the teams have met 66 times since 1894, including each year since 1977, with Iowa leading the all-time series 44-22.)

In last season’s matchup, the Cyclones got on the board first with a 23-yard field goal but failed to score again the rest of the game. Iowa running back Mekhi Sargent had the only touchdown of the day as Iowa defeated Iowa State 13-3.

Iowa Quick Hits:

• Quarterback Nate Stanley has 58 total career touchdown passes, which is the third all-time in program history. Stanley is only trailing Chuck Long (74) and Drew Tate (61).
• Sargent leads the Hawkeyes in carries (27) and rushing yards (150), and ranks second in receptions (6) and receiving yards (77). He also leads the team in all-purpose yards with 227.
• Wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette marked a career-high in last week’s game with 113 receiving yards, and matched his career record for receptions with four in both Week 1 and Week 2.
• The Hawkeyes rank second in the Big Ten in scoring defense (7.0), total defense (185.0) and passing defense (116.5).
• The defense is led by defensive end AJ Epenesa, who had one sack and four quarterback hurries last weekend against Rutgers. He led the Big Ten and ranked ninth in the country with 10.5 sacks last season.
• Defensive back Michael Ojemudia is tied for the Big Ten lead with two interceptions so far this season.
• Kirk Ferentz in his in 21st season as head coach at Iowa and is the Hawkeyes’ all-time winningest coach after surpassing Hayden Fry earlier this year. Ferentz is the longest tenured active head coach in college football.

Iowa State Quick Hits:

• The only time Iowa State has defeated a ranked Iowa team was in Ames in 2005, when the Cyclones brought down the No. 8 Hawkeyes 23-3.
• The Cyclones are currently riding a seven-game home winning streak, tied for the best streak in school history.
• With just 34 yards rushing allowed per game, the Iowa State defense ranks fifth nationally in run defense.
• Defensive end JaQuan Bailey only needs one more sack to become the Cyclones’ all-time career sack leader. He is currently tied with Shawn Moorehead (2004-06) with 18.5, the sixth-most by an active FBS player.
• The Cyclones returned all five starters on its offensive line this season.
• Wide receiver Deshaunte Jones set career highs in receptions (14) and receiving yards (126) in the opener against Northern Iowa. His 14 catches are tied for the most in the FBS this year and the second-best single-game total in program history.
• Quarterback Brock Purdy also set a career high in completions against UNI with 30, tied for the 10th-best single-game total in school history. Purdy already has the best career completion percentage (67.4) in school history.

North Carolina (2-0) at Wake Forest (2-0) – 6 p.m. (Friday) on ESPN

For the first time since the league was formed in 1953, this matchup between two ACC schools will not count towards either school’s conference record. Since the game was not scheduled through the ACC it is not considered a conference matchup.

Kansas (1-1) at Boston College (2-0) – 7:30 p.m. (Friday) on ACCN|
The Eagles are looking to start the season 3-0 for the second consecutive year as they host the Jayhawks in the first-ever meeting between programs.

Pittsburgh (1-1) at No. 13 Penn State – 12 p.m. on ABC
Saturday will mark the 100th overall meeting in this classic rivalry, and the fourth-and-final installment of the Keystone Classic presented by Peoples Natural Gas.

 NC State (2-0) at West Virginia (1-1) – 12 p.m. on FS1
These two programs are meeting for the 11th time overall in a rematch of our 2010 game, then known as the Champs Sports Bowl. In that game, the unranked Wolfpack – behind quarterback Russell Wilson – won 23-7 over the No. 22 Mountaineers.

Kansas State (2-0) at No. 23 Mississippi State (2-0) – 12 p.m. on ESPN
Kansas State is looking for its first regular-season win over an SEC team since it defeated Kentucky 23-9 in 1982.

No. 1 Clemson (2-0) at Syracuse (1-1) – 7:30 p.m. on ABC
Syracuse is seeking redemption as it faces No. 1-ranked Clemson at the Carrier Dome on Saturday. After a stunning home win over the then-fourth-ranked Tigers in 2017, the Orange blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead to Clemson in last year’s game at Death Valley.

TCU (1-0) at Purdue (1-1) – 7:30 p.m. on BTN
The Horned Frogs hope to continue their four-game winning streak — the longest active streak in the Big 12 — as Purdue hosts a Big 12 opponent for the first time in program history.

Florida State (1-1) at No. 25 Virginia (2-0) – 7:30 p.m. on ACCN
The Seminoles hit the road for the first time this season, as they travel to Charlottesville to play the Cavaliers in Scott Stadium for the first time since 2010.

Bethune-Cookman (1-0) at Miami (0-2) – 4 p.m. on ACCN
The Hurricanes are playing their first home game under the direction of head coach Manny Diaz after falling to 0-2 for the first time since 1978 last week. Since moving to Hard Rock Stadium, Miami is 11-0 in home openers.
