January 2, 1995

South Carolina won its first bowl game in school history, claiming a 24-21 victory over West Virginia.

The Gamecocks never trailed after capitalizing on a Mountaineer fumble as
MVP quarterback Steve Taneyhill threw a two-yard score to Boomer Foster. Leading 17-14 in the third quarter, South Carolina’s Stanley Pritchett ran for a one-yard TD to extend the Gamecocks’ lead to 24-14.

The Mountaineers answered with a seven-yard strike from Chad Johnston to Lovett Purnell with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter to cut South Carolina’s lead to 24-21.

The Gamecocks’ defense held off West Virginia twice in the final six minutes to preserve the narrow victory.
