Stanford used a balanced offense and stifling defense to defeat Penn State, 24-3, in its first New Year’s Day bowl game since 1972.
Quarterback Steve Stenstrom completed 17-of-28 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns and fullback Ellery Roberts rushed for 98 yards to spark the Cardinal offensive attack. Stenstrom hit tight end Ryan Wetnight on a two-yard scoring pass on the first drive of the game to put the Cardinal up, 7-0. Minutes later, the Nittany Lions scored their only points of the game on a 33-yard field goal by V.J. Muscillo. J.J. Lasley ran for a five-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give the Cardinal a 14-3 advantage entering halftime.
Stanford’s defense, led by game MVP Darrien Gordon, held Penn State
scoreless in the second half, allowing just 82 total yards.
