Alabama freshman David Palmer returned a punt 52 yards for a touchdown and dove for a five-yard TD catch as the Crimson Tide defeated the defending national champion
Colorado Buffaloes, 30-25.
After Palmer’s opening punt return score, Colorado capitalized on a blocked punt as Scott Phillips ran for a one-yard touchdown to tie the game at seven. The Buffaloes entered the second half leading 12-10, but the Crimson Tide finally mustered some offense with a pair of touchdown drives in the third quarter to take a 23-19 lead.
Palmer’s five-yard touchdown reception from Jay Barker in the fourth quarter cemented the Tide’s victory despite a late 13-yard TD catch by Charles Johnson to cut the score to 30-25. The Alabama defense stopped the Buffaloes on fourth-and-1 on the Tide’s 33-yard line with 48 seconds left in the game.
