In a matchup between coaching legends Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno, Florida State quarterback Casey Weldon completed 22-of-36 passes for 248 yards to lead the Seminoles to a 24-17 win over Penn State in the inaugural Blockbuster Bowl game.
Richie Andrews’ 41-yard field goal got the Seminoles on the board first, while Amp Lee’s one-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter put Florida State up 10-0. Lee, who ran for 86 yards on 21 carries and two scores, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
The Nittany Lions closed the gap in the closing minutes of the first quarter on a 56-yard touchdown catch by David Daniels from quarterback Tony Sacca, but the Seminoles were quick to respond with a seven-yard scoring run by Lee early in the second period to make it a 17-7 game for the remainder of the half.
